Portrait commission

What is the process of a portrait commission?

Painting a portrait in oils is a time-consuming activity, where a lot of attention is paid to the preparations. To come to the best result, it is preferable to visit the portrayed person. This gives me a better understanding of the client’s wishes and needs, the person portrayed and me the opportunity to get to know each other. This will ultimately lead to a more accomplished, personal and timeless portrait.

What is the cost of commissioning a portrait painting?

An indication of a commissioned portrait in oils is given below. The process consists of three stages. The first stage is conceptual, meant to offer you a few directions in which the painting can proceed. The artist will make a range of studies that will be presented to you. Roughly half of the effort will go into this conceptual stage, which is why 1/3 of the payment is asked beforehand.

After you wish to proceed, another 1/3 is paid, and I will work towards the end product. When this is to complete satisfaction, the rest is paid.

A portrait can have many different forms. A solo or group portrait, expressive, realistic, in a setting that tells a story, the possibilities are endless. I would really like to start a conversation to see what your ideas are.

Besides portrait paintings in oils I also make ink drawings. Characteristic for my ink drawings are the influence of studies on Rembrandt’s etchings, where light and loose pen strokes define the works. Prices for ink drawings start at 195 Euro, please feel free to contact me for this.
